Poland Historical Society member Ted Heineman will share "Rafting on the Ohio River" at this month's society meeting.

The historical society will meet 6:30 p.m. March 21 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, where Heineman will share stories and photographs from his personal adventures that started in 1995 and ended in 1997.

"I will be talking about my personal experiences of floating down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, Pa., to the Mississippi River," Heineman said. "I was in a 16-foot inflatable rubber raft with two other historians from Poland, Ohio."

Heineman said in 1995, it began when he and fellow crew members Dean Worsecroft, a retired pharmacist, and Dick Hill, a retired public accountant, set out to accomplish a goal of traveling 983 miles from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Cairo, Ill.

The trip encompassed 29 days on the Ohio River, split into three segments over a three-year period - 1995, 1996 and 1997.

"We only slept in motels, hotels and bed-and-breakfast houses and ate only in the best available restaurants," Heineman said. "I kept a photo diary of the entire journey and will show 20 rafting slides ..."

He said the rafting trip had some picturesque sites, including passing through 21 river locks and passing under 88 bridges across the Ohio River.

"This is the first time in the past 22 years that this story of rafting on the Ohio River has been told," he said.

The talk this month also sets the stage for a second presentation in November, where Heineman will list the historical sites the rafting crew visited in the six states bordering the Ohio River.

"I kept a photo diary, which has been sitting on a shelf in my library for the past 20 years," he said. "This is the first time the photos will be made public."

The talk also will pay tribute to Grace Hewes, who provided transportation to and from the Ohio River. She passed away several years ago, Heineman said.

The Little Red Schoolhouse is located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. The program will begin 7:30 p.m., and the public is welcome attend and experience "Rafting on the Ohio River."
