Canfield, Boardman choirs unite for concert
March 24, 2017

Canfield High School choirs and Boardman High School choirs will unite Saturday to perform with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown.

The Canfield choirs will perform under the direction of Kelly Scurich, while the Boardman choirs will be under the direction of Linda Smrek.

The combined talent will present the "Gloria" by Antonio Vivaldi along with the Youngstown orchestra, under the direction of Randal Fleischer.

"Randal Fleischer has been thinking about this for a while," Scurich said. "We discussed the matter last winter and chose dates that would work for both Canfield and the symphony. He asked if we would be capable of doing the Vivaldi 'Gloria,' and I said absolutely."

The two Canfield choirs taking part in this performance includes the One Octave Higher female ensemble and the Canfield Chamber Choir. Both performed on March 10 at Lake High School in Uniontown for the Ohio Music Educators Association district contest, where the two choirs as well as the symphonic and concert bands, under the direction of Michael Kelly, all earned superior ratings.

The two Canfield choirs are both auditioned groups that began at the start of the school year. They are part of a school day music class made up of mostly juniors and seniors and one sophomore. Both groups have been together since the beginning of the year and work to perfect their vocal skills and perform in top-notch venues such as the DeYor.

Scurich said hard work and dedication are responsible for the students' success.

"Both directors and students have a love and passion for what they are doing," she said. "All have to be of the same mind set and aspire for the same goals. Our goal is always to make meaningful music."

The performance will begin 8 p.m. Saturday. For tickets and additional details, call 330-744-0264 or visit
