Some Poland and Canfield residents will receive a visit from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The center said the survey began Monday and looks for data to reflect the state of the country

Mahoning County Health Commissioner Patricia Sweeney said the center looks for counties, and specific areas of those counties, that best represent America.

"Mahoning County is one of 15 counties selected this year," Sweeney said. "This is the first time this survey has been done here."

She said in the Town Crier coverage area, the center has selected one area of Poland and two sections of Canfield to conduct a survey. Agents with the CDC will conduct door-to-door surveys in the chosen areas.

"We don't know exactly which areas they will be in, as it remains private," Sweeney said.

From the interviews, roughly 300 people will be invited to take part in a health screening. The CDC will bring in mobile exam stations to the Southern Park Mall. The invited people will go there for blood tests and a health exam.

"It is entirely on a volunteer basis," Sweeney said.

Once the tests are completed, the information will be compiled in a national database to help the CDC when it comes to policy and services.

Sweeney said the blood tests will cover many health concerns. These tests, she said, helped change the policy on house paints when it was discovered that 90 percent of the population had high levels of lead in their blood many years ago. It lead to major changes in the production of house paints.

Some of the issues the CDC will look at this year are trends in diabetes and body fat.

After the tests are completed, the patient will be offered the exam results. Since the results remains confidential, Sweeney said it would be up to the person to share the information with their private or family physician.

Sweeney also said the tests are free for the individuals selected. The program will continue through the summer and end in August.
