Farmers Market to expand into more family-friendly environment
May 3, 2018

Austintown Farmer's Market director Shannon Lehn has been spreading the word about the market, which is taking on a new twist for 2018. Each market day will carry with it a theme.

"Not only are we having some new vendors, but we are also having theme weeks this year and weekly raffles, with the proceeds to benefit local organizations," Lehn said. "The themes are going to be pretty fun."

It is all part of Lehn's vision to expand and create a more family-friendly environment for the Monday events. Besides the usual baked goods, fruits, veggies and handcrafts, the market will see the addition of programs, music, and demonstrations, many of which will showcase local organizations and non-profits.

"I am reaching out to music schools and contacts for musicians to perform," she said. "I would be looking for solo musicians as a band would be a bit much for our venue."

Also new this year will be kids' crafts and adult classes as well. One example is a writing class on the storybook-themed week.

On the non-profit groups, Lehn said she will work with each to find the best possible way to help them out. On each themed night, there will be a raffle to benefit local organizations.

The market will go on rain or shine. If inclimate weather threatens and the indoor pavilion is not rented, the market can be moved inside, but Lehn said they make all efforts to keep it outdoors.

The opening day for the Farmer's Market is set for June 11, but this Sunday has been set aside for the annual Mother's Day Market, or Spring Market. It is an indoor/ outdoor market and will have free kids' crafts, Make it for Mom, which is an opportunity for children to make a craft for their loved one with a donation to Austintown Relay for Life. There will be a food truck, honey, plants, gifts, basket raffle, 50/50 and hourly giveaways of $25 Visa gift cards.
