Canfield boys U10 soccer team wins championship
June 13, 2018

On June 10, the Canfield Boys U10 Soccer Team wrapped up their spring season in Akron by winning the Greater Akron Amateur Soccer Association (GAASA) Division 1 championship. The team started as a Fall League and entered the Spring league this year, finishing the regular season with a 7-1 record.

The great season put them into the playoffs in Akron on Sunday. They won their semi-final match against CF Crew by a score of 5-3 to send them into the Division 1 final. In the final they took on CAK Blue and won the championship with a score of 4-2.

The team, composed of Jared Toporcer, Tristan English, Ben Cromwell, Andrew Padgett, Nicholas Atsas, Gabriel Miller, Alhussein Barakat, Ryan Dangol, Alex Taranto, Collin Casey, Aidan Kerns, and Tyler Rappach, was actually constructed in the Fall of 2017. While they came together as a team, the boys already had some experience under their belts.

"Most of the boys have been playing above a recreational level for 2-3 years," said Head Coach Tom Taranto. "This is an incredibly hard working team. They love playing soccer, especially with their friends. They are very tight knit."

The boys started together in the fall YAYSL (Youngstown Area Youth Soccer League). The decision was made to continue play in the spring by entering the GAASA as a competitive team. The GAASA is comprised of teams in the greater Akron, Cleveland, Canton, Youngstown areas.

"All teams in their GAASA Spring league were new teams that they [our boys] never played before," Taranto said. "The matchups in the [weekend's] playoffs were against teams they had played earlier during the regular [spring] season."

The boys will now have a month-long break before practice begins in July for the YAYSL season.

Besides the U10 boys, Canfield Soccer saw other successful seasons including the U9 boys finishing the GAASA Division 1 regular season as champs with a record of 7-0-1, the U12 Girls finishing the GAASA Division 1 regular season as champs with a record of 7-0-1, and the U13 Girls winning the Bowling Green Spring Challenge Premier Division championship and the Cedar Point Coaster Classic Premier Division championship.
