Austintown Intermediate School to host Camp Invention
April 24, 2019

Austintown Intermediate will again be the location for Camp Invention, a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The program challenges children in grades K through 66 to find their "inner inventor."

"Camp Invention began in 1990 as a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring, challenging and inspiring innovation," said Ken Torisky from NIHF.

"The National Inventors Hall of Fame and Camp Invention partnered with Austintown in 2017, and are in the third year of working together to bring Camp Invention to the Austintown community."

The Camp will run from June 10-20 with multiple sessions. This year's camp will feature a wide variety of activities to promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning; build confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills; and encourage entrepreneurship in a fun and engaging environment.

This year's activities will include Innovation Force where students become Superheroes and develop a device to recover stolen ideas, a deep sea fossil dig, managing a farm with technology, and exploring the world of robotics. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot.

All the lessons and work in the camp is taught by certified educators who are compensated for their time. The educators reside and teach in the Austintown community.

As for the cost to Austintown students, it is absolutely free according to Torisky.

Each year the program has been fully funded by sponsors," he said. "The program is only open to Austintown Local School District students. The Burton D. Morgan Foundation and the Nordson Corporation Foundation generously donated to the program, so Austintown Local School District students can attend the week-long program for free."

He said to the best of his knowledge, no "famous" people have attended camp. But, the NIHF Inductees, inventors of things like the digital camera and portable optical biosensors, regularly attend local camps to serve as inspiration for the campers.
