Boardman track teams remain undefeated

The Boardman boys track team competed at the Second Sole Elite Meet at GlenOak High School in Canton on April 13, finishing tied for 12th overall as a team out of a 23-team field. The meet featured some of the best athletes and teams in Ohio.

Highlighting the meet for the Spartans was junior David Merdich placing third in the shot put and senior Nikitas Missos placing sixth, Missos also placed fourth in the discus. The 4x400 relay team of junior Isaiah Suarez, sophomore Brennan Stratton, sophomore Cristian Ortiz, and sophomore Jonah Bacho placed sixth. Junior Mitchel Dunham placed fifth in the 3200 meter run. Junior Brian Yauger was seventh in the 300 hurdles. Sophomore Micah Beckwith placed first in the seated 100, 400, 800, and shot put.

"This was a great chance for us to see some top notch competition and have some fun at the same time," said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips, "GlenOak did a great job running the meet and it was a good day for our team."

On April 16, the Boardman boys track team improved its 2019 record to 7-0 and 3-0 in the AAC with a 95-42 victory over the Warren Harding Raiders on Tuesday.

The Spartans opened the meet with a first place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of senior Payton Torres, juniors Mitchel Dunham and Alan Cuevas, and sophomore Cristian Ortiz. The next event, the 110-meter hurdles, junior Brian Yauger placed first and freshman Trey DePietro placed third. In the 100-meter dash, Spartan senior Josh Rodriguez placed first and classmate Zach Hillard was third.

In the 1600-meter run, sophomore Frank Bero placed first and junior River Flatley was second. Junior Isaiah Suarez was first in the 400-meter run with sophomore Jonah Bacho in second and Ortiz third. Yauger was first in the 300 hurdles and DePietro was third. Dunham was first in the 800-meter run. The 200-meter run saw sophomore Brennan Stratton place third. The next event was the 3200-meter run which was won by Bero with sophomore Justin Maloney in second and senior Cameron Maloney in third. The 4x400 relay team of Suarez, Yauger, Cuevas, and Torres placed first.

In the field events, junior Dave Merdich won the shot put and senior Nikitas Missos was second. Missos placed first in the discus with Merdich taking third. In the high jump freshman Gerrick Angel was first, junior Derrick Anderson was second, and freshman Anthony Hightower and sophomore Aiden Glatz tied for third. Glatz was second in the long jump. The pole vault was won by Spartan sophomore Sam Cammack with classmate Vi Kiet Lau in second and Angel third.

The Boardman Lady Spartan track and field team improved their record to 7-0 on the season with a 103-33 victory over the Lady Raiders of Warren Harding on April 16.

First place finishes on the evening include: the 4x800 relay of Hannah Ryan, Shayne Harris, Macy Potts and Sophia McGee in a time of 11:22; Keimanni Boyd in the 100 hurdles 17.5; the 4x200 relay of Dre'Ana Elliott, Jordan Solmen, Raelyn Cuevas and Tierra Stevenson in 1:59; Alayna Cuevas in the 1600 in 5:42; Denise Scott in the 400 in 75.6; Jordan Solmen in the 300 hurdles in 51.3; Raegan Burkey in the 800 in 2:26; Sophia McGee in the 3200 in 13:09; the 4x400 relay of Alayna Cuevas, Bailey Moore, Gina Gabriele and Raegan Burkey; Emily Carnahan in both the shot put and discus in 33-5 and 89-3; Kenzie Widrig in the pole vault with a 7-6 effort and finally Ryleigh Neill in the high jump with a 4-8 effort.

Second place finishes on the evening include: Faith Colkitt in the 100 hurdles; Destinee Hayes in the 100; Sophia McGee in the 1600; Alayna Cuevas in the 800; Macy Potts in the 3200; Brigita Ositis in both the shot put and discus; Tara Pasvanis in the pole vault and Haley Ho in high jump.

Third place and the final scoring position on the evening include: Macy Potts in the 1600; Raelyn Cuevas in the 400; Faith Colkitt in the 300 hurdles; Bailey Moore in the 800; Tierra Stevenson in the 200; Hannah Ryan in the 3200; Keimanni Boyd in the shot put; Ali Williams in the discus; Gracie Beil in the long jump; Ryleigh Neill in the pole vault and Tara Pasvanis in the high jump.
