Andrea Emery has returned home to Canfield with a lot of new friends and memories. She wore the title and crown of Ohio's Miss Amazing as she competed in a National Miss Amazing event in Chicago.

The Miss Amazing event is part of a mission to provide equal opportunities for girls and women with disabilities. It offers them a chance to show the world they are confident, able, and just plain amazing individuals.

Emery had earned her trip to the Nationals in Chicago by winning the state crown late last year. As Ohio Miss Amazing, she represented the state in her respective age group and joined 150 other young women from 32 state at the Chicago event.

Attending the event with Emery was her buddy Jillian MtCastle. She has been close to Emery and has provided support and encouragement to get her through. Jillian found Chicago's event very inspiring.

"It was good seeing all those girls get out on stage and be so confident," MtCastle said.

As for Emery, her talent was something she really enjoys. She did a stand-up comedy routine that kept the audience laughing.

"My favorite joke was what do you call a bear with no teeth," Emery said. "A gummy bear."

Emery was given a trophy as a Miss Amazing and earned a gold medal as well. Her medal was for volunteer hours. She has put in over 150 hours for the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley and also volunteers at Salem Community Theater, Hopewell Theater, and had a personal project to make people happy, called Rocks of Cheer.

During the Canfield Fourth of July week, Emery hand-painted 100 rocks with simple messages like "believe" or "joy" writing on them. She placed them around the City of Canfield with instructions to visit a website and report the rock and where it was moved to.

"25 of the 100 have been found and reported," Emery said.

Of the 25, 4 have traveled. Two of them are, at last report, in Hilton, New York. One other one was last reported on a bench at Cleveland Airport.

"If you find one and it hasn't been logged in yet, go to the Facebook page and log it in," Emery said.

The Facebook page is "100 Rocks of Cheer."

Emery and MtCastle plan on keeping tabs on the rocks, while preparing for the next Ohio Miss Amazing event in October. That is when a new Miss Ohio will be chosen and Emery will pass on the crown. She can then sit out a year and return to compete in 2020.
